Motorized Pergola, Putting Green, and Privacy Wall for an All-In-One Backyard Retreat

a Covered Area the Whole Family Can Enjoy

A younger couple with a growing family found us through our Google reviews and reached out about their backyard. They already had a beautiful pool, but the existing covered area was small and didn't give them room to relax or entertain. They wanted a space that worked for cookouts, family hangouts, and quiet evenings by the pool, plus a little fun built into the yard for the kids.

By the time Impact Enclosures wrapped, the backyard didn't just feel bigger. It felt like a destination.

We added an Azenco RShade aluminum-covered roof with fan beams, integrated lighting, and an Outdoor Matthews fan. A Hardie slat wall along one side gave them a clean surface to mount a TV and gave them privacy from the neighbors. And just off the covered space, we built in an astroturf putting green that turned the corner of the yard into something the whole family uses.

It's the kind of backyard that doesn't ask you to choose between relaxing and entertaining. It just does both.

Location

Jacksonville, Florida

Project Goals

  • Expand a small covered area into a usable, year-round entertaining space
  • Add privacy from neighbors
  • Bring fun and function to the rest of the yard.

Materials & Features That Bring It All Together

Every piece of this project was selected with Florida weather, low maintenance, and clean design in mind. The homeowners specifically didn't want anything that would require upkeep, so we leaned into materials that look warm and elevated but don't ask for much in return.

Here's what went into the build:

  • Azenco RShade aluminum cover with a wood-look ceiling for the warmth of a wood finish without any of the maintenance
  • Fan beams designed to integrate ceiling fans cleanly into the structure
  • Outdoor Matthews ceiling fan mounted into the fan beam for serious air movement on humid Jacksonville afternoons
  • Ramp lights integrated into the structure for soft, ambient evening lighting
  • Hardie slat wall along one side for a TV mount surface and full privacy from the neighbors
  • 7" Super Gutter with 4x5 downspouts to manage rainwater runoff without adding posts
  • Astroturf putting green with flags, built off the covered area for everyday backyard fun
  • Paver decking flowing seamlessly from the cover out to the pool and putting green

DESIGNING AROUND THE CHALLENGES

Every backyard project comes with its own set of constraints. This one had three worth talking about, and each one shaped the final build in a meaningful way.

A Small Footprint That Couldn't Spare Two Posts

The biggest challenge on this project was space. The backyard was limited.

Normally, we'd install a freestanding four-post covered area. On this project, adding the two extra posts would have made it difficult to comfortably walk around the space. There also wasn't enough room to tie the covered shade directly into the header of the house, which is our other typical solution.

So we engineered around it. We installed a Super Gutter instead, which allowed us to eliminate two posts while still providing the structural support needed and properly handling the additional water runoff.

Privacy From the Neighbors

To give the homeowners privacy from the neighbors, we added a Hardie slat wall along one side of the space. It also gave them the surface they needed to mount their TV.

A Wood Look Without the Wood Maintenance

The homeowners were firm on one thing: no wood. They didn't want the maintenance that comes with it.

So instead of a wood ceiling, we installed an aluminum ceiling that has the look of wood, giving them the warmth of a wood finish without the upkeep.

A Backyard That Finally Matches the Life Inside the House

This project is exactly why we love what we do. Beautiful pool, ideal neighborhood, family that wanted to make the most of their space, and a design challenge that pushed us to think differently. Every piece of this build came together to turn a tight footprint into a backyard that actually works for the way this family lives.

They didn't just get a bigger covered area. They got a TV wall for game nights, a putting green for the kids, a fan that keeps the space comfortable, and a finish package that won't have them re-staining anything five years from now.

It's the kind of result that comes from listening closely, designing carefully, and refusing to settle for the easy version of the build.
